The three cold alerts
| Alert | What it means | NWS says |
|---|---|---|
| Frost Advisory | Frost is expected or happening and can hurt sensitive plants. One NWS office (Sterling, VA) issues it for forecast lows of 33 to 36°F on clear, calm nights. | Be aware. |
| Freeze Watch | Significant, widespread freezing temperatures are possible in the next 24 to 36 hours. | Be prepared. |
| Freeze Warning | Temperatures are forecast to go below 32°F for a long period of time, cold enough to kill some crops and plants. | Take action. |
From the NWS cold alerts page and the Sterling, VA office's definitions, read Oct 20, 2026. Exact criteria vary by local office.
There is no Hard Freeze Warning anymore
Since October 1, 2024, the NWS renamed Hard Freeze Watches to Freeze Watches and folded Hard Freeze Warnings into Freeze Warnings. The NWS alert list today has Freeze Watch, Freeze Warning and Frost Advisory, and no hard-freeze types. If your notes still say "wait for a Hard Freeze Warning," that alert won't come.
Why freeze alerts stop in late fall
Frost and freeze alerts protect plants and crops during the local growing season. That season runs from the median last spring freeze to the median first fall freeze. Outside of it, the NWS does not issue frost or freeze headlines and asks people to follow the temperature forecast.
Offices end the season in different ways. NWS Charleston, WV ends it after a hard freeze, which it calls 3 or more hours below 29°F. On Oct 18, 2026 it said it would no longer issue frost and freeze alerts for eight West Virginia counties for the rest of 2026. NWS Binghamton, NY uses fixed end dates by area.
For a heating or plumbing shop this matters. Pipes and outdoor spigots don't care about the growing season. Winter's coldest nights come after the growing season has ended, when there are no freeze alerts at all.
How ForecastBooked handles it
- Every 3 hours we check the NWS forecast and active alerts for each ZIP you serve.
- First freeze: the first forecast night of the season at 32°F or colder, or an active NWS Freeze Warning.
- Hard freeze: a forecast low of 28°F or colder. This one runs on the forecast, so it still fires after the alerts stop for the season.
- Each kit appears on your private kit page with a customer email, a text script, a Google post and a social post for you to check and send to your own opted-in customers.
- Plans are $19, $39, $79 a month by number of ZIPs, after a 14-day free trial. See how triggers work.
Questions
- What is the difference between a Freeze Watch and a Freeze Warning?
- A Freeze Watch means a widespread freeze is possible in the next 24 to 36 hours. A Freeze Warning means it is expected. Both come from your local National Weather Service office.
- Does the NWS still issue Hard Freeze Warnings?
- No. Since October 1, 2024, Hard Freeze Watches became Freeze Watches and Hard Freeze Warnings were folded into Freeze Warnings, per the NWS. Offices can add hard-freeze wording inside a Freeze Warning.
- Why didn't my area get a Freeze Warning when it was below freezing?
- Frost and freeze alerts are tied to the local growing season. Outside of it, the NWS does not issue frost or freeze headlines and asks people to watch the temperature forecast. Some offices, such as NWS Charleston, WV, end the season after the first hard freeze.
- When should an HVAC or plumbing shop send a freeze reminder?
- Before the first cold night, not after. A Freeze Watch gives about a day or more of notice. Late in the fall there may be no alert at all, so watch the forecast low too.
- How does ForecastBooked use these alerts?
- It checks the NWS forecast and alerts for each ZIP you serve every 3 hours. Your first-freeze kit fires on the first forecast low of 32°F or colder, or an active Freeze Warning. A hard-freeze kit fires at a forecast low of 28°F or colder, with or without an alert.
